KAPIT, April 29: A 31-year-old woman suffered a loss of RM17,500 after being deceived by a non-existent investment fraud syndicate.

The incident happened when the victim was attracted to a stock investment advertisement while browsing social media on April 22.

Kapit District Police Chief, Deputy Superintendent Freddy Bian said the victim was then added into an investment group in the Telegram app for further dealings.

“The victim had made an initial investment of RM500 and was told she could get a return of RM25,000,” he said.

He said the complainant was then required to make three payment transactions amounting to RM2,000, RM5,000 and RM10,000 respectively so as to be able to receive the promised return from the investment.

“However, the woman realized that she had been cheated when the suspect kept asking her for more payments to different individual accounts, after which she lodged a police report at the Kapit Police Station on Monday,” he said.

Freddy said the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

He advised the public to be always wary of the various modus operandi of fraud syndicates.

The public is also encouraged to make a verification check through the website http://ccid.rmp.gov.my/semakmule/ to identify the bank account and telephone numbers involved in fraud cases. — DayakDaily
