KUCHING, July 6: It is truly phenomenal to witness an entire family united by an activity, and in the case of Lee Woon Jiun, her whole family participated in a writing competition that DayakDaily recently organised.

The 52-year-old Lee emerged as the third-place winner in the adult category, while her husband, 55-year-old engineer John Lau Lee Yii, was also among the shortlisted participants for the writing competition.

Upon being interviewed by DayakDaily, Lee shared that two of her children had also participated in the ‘Gastronomy and I: My Favourite Dish’ writing competition.

“My youngest did not participate as she is only 11 years old,” said Lee, adding that perhaps next year, her daughter would join in, just as the rest of the family did this year.

To Lee, parents, in general, need to set a good example for their children to follow. In her case, participating in a writing competition was a way to encourage her children to join as well.

“Having my kids join the competition is not only good for them to practice writing, but for kids in general, it exposes them to all the cultures in Sarawak.

“I really feel that Sarawak is blessed. We are blessed for living here, we are so rich in culture, in food, and everything. And it is important to instil a proper and positive attitude towards diversity in the younger generation,” said Lee.

According to her, she came across the writing competition on Facebook, finding it an intriguing topic to write about since it involved Sarawak food.

After careful consideration, Lee decided to write about Lei Cha, also known as ‘thunder tea’ in English, because the dish holds significant meaning for her.

“It (Lei Cha) is a Hakka dish. I am part Hakka on my mother’s side, so this dish is important to me,” she said. — DayakDaily
