KUCHING, Jan 27: Two rabies-positive cases involving pet dogs have been recorded in Kuching this week.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng expressed concern that certain portions of the public still lack awareness, knowledge, and understanding regarding the severity of rabies.

“As such, we are going to translate the existing brochures on rabies from English to Chinese and print them out so that they can be distributed and reach more people.

“Additionally, more rabies information posters will be put up in public places to enhance awareness,” he said during his ShallWeeTalk online session today.

Wee also issued a reminder to pet owners, urging them to ensure their dogs and cats receive annual anti-rabies vaccinations.

He emphasised that safeguarding the health and well-being of pets is crucial for protecting oneself and family members from the risks of rabies.

“If bitten by your pet and it is found positive for rabies, it will not be worth it. Patients will be living in anxiety during the treatment process, which will take quite a long time,” he said.

Furthermore, Wee reminded pet owners to confine their pets within their house compounds and not let them roam freely and mingle with animals from outside.

For pet owners who find it inconvenient to bring their pet dogs or cats for vaccination during public campaigns or visit the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) Sarawak office, Wee advised them to engage a private veterinarian or private pet clinic.

“I think the vaccination service is reasonably priced. This option is also more cost-effective and convenient for those with several pets, instead of transporting them to DVS office in 12th Mile, which would also incur petrol price,” he added. — DayakDaily
