KUCHING, Oct 10: A real estate agent in Padawan fell victim to a part-time job scam on October 9, losing RM400,000.

In a media release, Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said that the victim, a man in his early 30s, was browsing an e-commerce content management system (CMS) site at the end of August this year where his phone number was added to a Telegram group.

“The victim was offered a part-time job promising huge profits and then given a link to register an account. He was then required to pay for each order of goods by customers and was promised a profit,” he said.

He said the victim had performed 45 transactions totalling RM400,000 to 12 bank accounts from the end of August to the end of September this year.

“According to the victim, he only received a profit of RM15,985 in the first two weeks. He realised he’d been deceived when payment for the requested goods increased, and the amount of goods that needed to be paid increased while he received zero profit.

“The victim tried contacting the company to ask for a return of the capital but failed to do so, prompting him to lodge a police report,” he said.

He added that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing the delivery of property, which carries a prison sentence of between one to ten years and with whipping. The offender is also liable to a fine upon conviction. — DayakDaily
