KUCHING, Oct 10: The federal government is finalising talks with Sarawak about a proposal to sell energy from the State to Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia, as stated by Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“Sarawak has benefited from, and we have approved, the sale of energy from Sarawak to Indonesia’s upcoming new capital Nusantara in Kalimantan, and from Sarawak to Sabah.

“And now, we are in the final stages of our agreement for the sale of energy from Sarawak to Singapore, and from Sarawak to the peninsula, agreed by the governments of Sarawak, Singapore, and Malaysia.

“This demonstrates that the federal government takes a different approach to fulfilling all of the agreements stipulated in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63),” Anwar (Pakatan Harapan-Tambun) said during the minister’s question time in the Dewan Rakyat, which was streamed live via Malaysia Parliament’s YouTube channel today.

The Prime Minister was responding to questions from Sabah Deputy Chief Minister 1 Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey Kitingan (Gabungan Rakyat Sabah-Keningau) on the federal government’s efforts and funding to accelerate economic development in Sabah and Sarawak.

Meanwhile, Utility and Telecommunications (MUT) Sarawak Minister Datuk Julaihi Narawi noted on Sept 7 during a press conference at the Sustainability and Renewable Energy Forum (SAREF) 3.0 in Kuching that the implementation of the undersea cable project, aimed at exporting electricity from Sarawak to Singapore, is progressing well.

He also reiterated that the Sarawak government, through Sarawak Energy Berhad (Sarawak Energy), had agreed to supply power to Singapore with a cap of 1,000 megawatts (MW).

Julaihi highlighted that the power supply will be from Tondong via undersea cable and direct to Singapore.

Furthermore, on Oct 7 at the opening of the 2023 Advancing Asia Economic Forum in Kuching, it was reported that Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that Peninsular Malaysia will have to build its own cables across the South China Sea if it wants to buy renewable energy from Sarawak. — DayakDaily
