KUCHING, July 8: Two workers in Sarawak have become the latest recipients of benefits under the 24-Hour Protection Scheme (Skim Lindung 24 Jam) after being involved in separate road accidents.

The workers, both active contributors under the Employees’ Social Security Act 1969, were confirmed eligible to receive Temporary Disablement Benefit (FHUS) despite the accidents occurring outside their official working hours.

According to the Social Security Organisation (Socso), the first recipient, Spencer Chambol, 40, a plantation supervisor, was involved in an accident during the weekend on June 14.

“At the time of the incident, he was travelling from a longhouse back to the workers’ quarters after a weekend break when the motorcycle he was riding skidded on a rain-slick road.

“The accident caused him to suffer serious injuries, including a fractured right arm. He is currently undergoing follow-up treatment at Bintulu Hospital after receiving initial emergency care at Mukah Hospital.

“Following verification, Spencer was found eligible for income replacement under FHUS during his medical leave from June 14 to 21, with Socso paying a total of RM4,470 in benefits,” it said in a statement today.

Meanwhile, general worker Aran Lenchau, 24, also qualified for FHUS after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a vehicle along Jalan Paragon at about 9pm on June 13.

Socso said he suffered a fractured left leg as well as external injuries to his neck, fingers and face, entitling him to Socso-funded medical treatment and income replacement during his 14-day medical leave period. The total benefits paid amounted to RM1,652.

“The Socso Prihatin Squad in Bintulu visited Bintulu Hospital shortly after receiving the accident report to assist the contributor in completing claim documents and to explain the benefits available to him,” it said.

In a separate case in Sarikei, Leanard Martin was confirmed eligible for benefits under the 24-Hour Protection Scheme after a palm thorn pierced his finger while he was helping family members prune branches at a private plantation on June 6.

According to Socso, a severe infection later developed, resulting in the amputation of his left little finger.

“His case was approved under FHUS and he received RM378 in benefits for 21 days of medical leave,” it said.

Socso added that all of Leanard’s follow-up treatment was completed on July 3 and he had been advised to apply for Permanent Disablement Benefit (FHUK).

“This is important to enable an assessment of the long-term effects of his physical injury, namely the loss of a finger, to ensure his continued welfare and protection.

“Socso will continue to monitor the condition of all affected contributors and remains committed to providing assistance to workers in Sarawak who are involved in accidents,” it added. — DayakDaily
