KUCHING, Dec 9: A church and a mosque will soon stand side by side in Sebauh, reflecting the unity and mutual respect between the Christian and Muslim communities in the area.

The concept, inspired by Lutong’s unique example of religious harmony with a church and mosque built next to each other, was announced by the Minister of Food Industry, Commodity, and Regional Development (FICORD) Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom.

According to a news report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) today, Dr Rundi shared that five acres of land have been allocated for each house of worship, which will share a parking space separated by only a fence.

“With that idea (Lutong’s church and mosque built side by side), I will also implement a project in Sebauh, a district under my supervision where we have five acres of land for a mosque, five acres of land for a church,” said Dr Rundi today after his visit to the St Peter’s Catholic church.

Dr Rundi, who is also Kemena assemblyman, said that the Sarawak government has approved RM20 million for the project, with RM10 million allocated to each house of worship.

He added that the project is currently in the tender process. — DayakDaily
