KUCHING, May 16: Sarawak is strengthening technology and English language proficiency among the younger generation as a key strategy to ensure the State remains competitive on the global stage.
According to TVS, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that in today’s digital and automation era, competence in science and technology must be combined with fluency in the language of knowledge, which is English.
“We do not glorify English, but we see it as the language of knowledge.
“As a complement to this initiative, Sarawak has expanded the implementation of the Dual Language Programme (DLP) and provided intensive training for teachers to be in line with the current needs of global education,” he said.
He said this at the ‘Majlis Malam Berambeh Segulai Sejalai’ in conjunction with the 54th National Teachers’ Day 2025 celebration held here on Thursday night (May 15).
Abang Johari was referring to Sarawak’s efforts to develop the hydrogen industry as a renewable energy source that requires expertise in the fields of science, engineering, and chemistry.
Currently, he said, Sarawak has six international schools that allow high-performing students from underprivileged families to enjoy the international curriculum for free to ensure balanced access to the global system.
At the same time, he added that about 60 fields of study will be offered in State-owned universities by 2026, including a course in construction management.
This step, he said, is among the strategic approaches to ensure that Sarawakians can compete with countries such as China and India, which have taken the lead in the field of global technology and innovation.
