KUCHING, May 28: The Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) has become nothing more than a meek junior partner, politically submissive to Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), toeing the line, nodding in silence, and remaining conveniently quiet in the name of so-called “stability” even as fundamental Sarawakian values are threatened.
This was the stinging response issued today by Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong, who lashed out at Deputy Premier and SUPP president Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian for claiming in his ministerial winding-up speech that Sarawak’s political stability was due to the absence of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) in the State government.
“I read with disbelief Dr Sim’s remark, branding DAP as ‘divisive’ and suggesting our absence is why Sarawak is stable. That statement reeks of political ignorance, whitewashing, and is a gross insult to the fundamentals of parliamentary democracy,” Yong said in a statement.
She stressed that DAP’s current position in the opposition is not a result of divisiveness, but a reflection of the people’s mandate during the last State election.
“DAP is not in the Sarawak government because we respect the will of the people. We won two out of 82 seats. We accepted that with humility and serve where voters placed us as the opposition. That is the essence of democracy — not blind obedience to those in power, but principled service to the rakyat,” she added.
Yong further lambasted SUPP’s track record, pointing to its previous political alignment with the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition before the formation of the federal unity government or Madani government.
“SUPP willingly aligned with a coalition where PAS — known for its extremist stance — was dominant. That decision alone speaks volumes about the compromises they are willing to make in the name of political expediency,” she charged.
The DAP Sarawak lawmaker also challenged Dr Sim to point to a single instance where the opposition party has ever divided Sarawakians.
“When have we ever played the politics of race or religion? The answer is never. DAP’s track record is crystal clear — we have consistently fight for justice, transparency, and the rights of all Malaysians, regardless of background,” she said.
She insisted that true political stability should not be built on silence, submission, or selective memory.
“It is achieved when every voice is heard, when power is held accountable, and when governance is inclusive, not when the ruling elite are shielded from scrutiny. DAP Sarawak will not be silenced. We will continue to speak without fear or favour, to demand transparent governance, expose misuse of public funds, and fight for fair and inclusive development for all Sarawakians,” she said.
Yong affirmed DAP’s unwavering stance: “Our commitment is to the people, not to political convenience or elite alliances,” she said. — DayakDaily
