KUCHING, June 28: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Kuching Branch acting secretary and Youth chairman Nicholas Wung Duk Ying has criticised Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (DAPSY) Sarawak for allegedly rushing to take credit over the return of Bintulu Port to Sarawak.
He said the takeover was the result of years of negotiations and commitment by the Sarawak government, including a RM1.8 billion payment to acquire the strategic asset.
“Bintulu Port did not return to Sarawak because of a political statement. It involved negotiations, asset valuation, transfer of rights and a RM1.8 billion commitment by the Sarawak government.
“The money came from Sarawak, and the port is now being taken over by Sarawak. Yet DAP is quick to claim credit. Sarawakians can see through this,” he said in a statement.
Wung also cited past remarks by DAP leader Lim Guan Eng that Sarawak would go bankrupt under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), saying the State had since proven otherwise with its financial strength.
He added that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had also acknowledged Sarawak’s financial capability, reportedly noting he had never received a cheque from a State government before.
Wung also criticised a DAPSY promotional graphic on the issue, claiming the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s image was covered while DAP figures were highlighted, although it was later amended.
He said while federal cooperation should be acknowledged, DAPSY should not portray itself as the main driver of the achievement.
“The return of Bintulu Port is the result of Sarawak’s long struggle and commitment. It is not a credit DAPSY Sarawak can claim through a poster or statement,” he said.
He also said that if DAPSY Sarawak was sincere, it should apologise to Sarawakians over the inappropriate graphic instead of deflecting the issue with political rhetoric. — DayakDaily
