MIRI, Nov 27: An astronomy centre (pusat falak) in Bintulu Division will start operating in the first quarter of next year.

According to a report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Deputy Minister of Utility Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said the physical construction of the centre has been fully completed.

“We in Sarawak actually see the need to ensure that we can become a reference point to other states in the field of astronomy by establishing a bigger astronomy centre.

“We have set up the first astronomy centre in Miri and we will have a second one in Bintulu next year. Insya-Allah in another two or three years, the Sarawak government is planning to build the Borneo Astronomy Centre located at Damai near the foot of Mount Santubong in Kuching.

“In other words, we will have three astronomy centres in the future,” he said when officiating at the opening ceremony for ‘Street Falak Expo’ at Pusat Falak Miri here yesterday (Nov 26).

The expo featured various astronomy-related activities such as talks, an exhibition, ‘Betul Sik Bacaan Al-Fatihah Kamek?’, food stalls, quiz, colouring competition, water rocket competition and more.

Also present were Sarawak Mufti Datu Kipli Yassin, Sarawak Mufti Department director Mual Suaud, Miri Resident Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusuf and community leader for Miri Division Temenggong Datuk Abdul Rahman Abang Fadzail. – DayakDaily
