KUCHING, May 18: The Sarawak government has approved, in principle, to construct three new road links and upgrade two roads in Sibu to alleviate traffic congestion issues, says Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng.

He said with the increasing number of vehicles each year, the traffic congestion in Sibu has become a serious issue, andnew roads are urgently needed.

The proposed new linked roads are from Aman Roundabout to Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman; from Ulu Sungai Merah to Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Teku; and from Teku Pasai Siong to Kemuyang.

Chieng added that Jalan Ulu Oya from Jalan Tong Sang/Jalan Wong King Huo traffic junction to Jalan Pahlawan traffic junction; and Jalan Kong Yit Khim would be upgraded from single carriageway to dual carriageway under the first phase.

“With the new linked roads and road upgrades, the traffic congestion in Sibu is expected to be significantly alleviated.

“The people are eagerly looking forward to the implementation of these roads soon,” he said when debating the motion in appreciation of TYT’s speech at today’s Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUNy.

To improve traffic conditions during school dismissal time, Chieng expressed hopes that Sibu could have a Traffic Warden programme similar to other cities in Sarawak.

“Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has sent personnel for training, but the programme’s implementation hasn’t started yet.

“I would like to inquire about the reasons behind this delay and request the relevant ministry to resolve this issue as soon as possible,” he added. — DayakDaily
