KUCHING, May 13: Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng (GPS-SUPP) confirms that the master plan for Bukit Assek Redevelopment prepared by internationally renowned consultant Ramboll has officially received final approval from the Sarawak Planning Authority (SPA) on January 28, 2026.
Expressing strong support for the plan, which he described as “a landmark initiative that will transform Sibu into a modern, sustainable and future-ready urban centre”, Chieng of the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party said the project marks a major milestone in Sibu’s urban transformation journey and reflects the Sarawak Government’s strong commitment to comprehensive, long-term redevelopment planning.
“The redevelopment area has now been strategically expanded from the original 497 acres to approximately 815 acres, incorporating not only Bukit Assek but also parts of Sibu town.
“This reflects a more holistic planning approach that integrates flood mitigation, transportation connectivity, infrastructure upgrading, riverfront enhancement, commercial development, and residential planning under one coordinated masterplan,” said Chieng when debating the Motion of Thanks on TYT Address at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly here today.
He held that the redevelopment is not merely about physical transformation, it is also a major economic catalyst for Sibu.
“I am encouraged that the Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) had proactively promoted the Bukit Assek Redevelopment Project during the ‘Sarawak Mega Fair 2025’ in Singapore, positioning Sibu as an emerging investment destination while showcasing Sarawak’s development aspirations under PCDS (Post Covid-19 Development Strategy) 2030.”
While jubilant about the approved project, Chieng hoped to see that it will be a project where the people are placed at the centre of planning where affordable resettlement housing must be properly implemented to ensure affected residents can continue living in a conducive, accessible, and affordable environment.
“Development should improve the people’s quality of life and not become a burden to them.
“In this regard, I strongly urge LCDA to organise a comprehensive public exhibition after the official announcement of the master plan by our YAB Premier of Sarawak (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg). Such engagement is essential to provide clarity to residents, landowners, stakeholders, and people of Sibu regarding implementation phases, timelines, redevelopment frameworks, flood mitigation strategies, resettlement planning, and anticipated economic benefits.”
“The people deserve transparency, engagement, and the opportunity to participate in this historic transformation journey,” said Chieng. —DayakDaily
