SIBU, March 9: A teacher lost RM16,764 after being deceived by an online food ordering and delivery scam.

Sibu district police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the 40-year-old victim lodged a report on March 8 claiming she had been cheated in a scam.

“On March 7, the woman was attracted by a Facebook advertisement for food ordering and delivery. After that, she clicked on the link to contact the suspect, who introduced himself as ‘Alex’ on WhatsApp,” he said.

Zulkipli said the suspect then informed her that the 20-day package for food orders cost RM170 with an additional deposit of RM100 for the food containers.

Without suspecting anything, she agreed and made a reservation payment transaction amounting to RM270 into an account number provided by the suspect.

“After the payment was made, the victim received a message from another man who introduced himself as ‘Lee’ and asked her to click on a link to download the delivery application.

“She then filled in her personal information and registered using a credit card to make a registration payment for RM1 as a new member.

“However, the next day, she received several messages asking for the one-time password (OTP) number for her card, which she obliged. After checking with her bank, she was told that her credit card had been charged RM16,494.30,” said Zulipli.

ACP Zulipli said investigation papers have been opened under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. — DayakDaily
