SIBU, Jan 12: A three-hour downpour from 4pm yesterday (Jan 11) caused severe traffic jams along roads that were hit by flash floods in Sibu.

Most people on their way home from work yesterday were stuck in a traffic jam for one hour to almost two hours, with traffic gridlock still being felt today during morning rush hour.

Fire and Rescue Department Zone 4 chief Andy Alie advised residents in flood-prone areas to exercise caution during this rainy season.

“With frequent heavy rainfall and recent flooding incidents in various areas, I advise residents, especially those in high-risk zones, to prepare for relocation when instructed by the authorities.

“For those residing along riverbanks, please refrain from going to rivers and canals for fishing, as we are concerned about potential unforeseen incidents,” he said when contacted today.

Andy stressed the pre-flood measures, including staying informed about flood warnings through social media, radio, or newspapers.

“When relocating, bring only essential items, documents, and medications. Identify the nearest temporary evacuation centre (PPS),” he said.

He also urged affected residents to switch off all electrical sources when relocating and avoid touching fallen electrical wires in flood-affected areas.

The department, he said, is consistently conducting patrols in flood-prone areas in preparation for the northeast monsoon (MTL).

“Patrols cover various locations, including Sungai Merah Market, Bahagia Jaya Village, Ding Lik Kwong Road, Ling Kai Cheng Road, Ulu Sungai Merah Road, Khoo Peng Loong Road Express Wharf, Simpang 3 Ferry Terminal, Bandar Sibu Riverbank, Tiong Hua Road, Lanang Road, Sentosa Road, and Kampung Datu Road,” he said. — DayakDaily
