Sibu records highest Covid-19 daily toll despite 70% dip from yesterday

KUCHING, Feb 28: Covid-19 cases in Sibu have dropped by almost 70 per cent, with a record of 33 from the 106 cases yesterday.

Despite the improvement, the reports by State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) today still registered Sibu as the district with the most number of cases among the total tally of 171.


Other districts having new cases in the past one day were  Miri (31), Bintulu (29), Betong (20), Kapit (20), Kuching (15), Serian (9), Kanowit (4), Beluru (2), Sri Aman (2), Asajaya (1), Bau (1), Bukit Mabong (1), Julau (1), Samarahan (1) and Sebauh (1).

Out of the total, 88 were from close contact screenings across 10 districts namely in Sibu with 22 cases, Bintulu (22), Miri (19), Kuching (8), Serian (7), Betong (5), Kanowit (2), Kapit (1), Bau (1) and Samarahan (1).

Other than that, 26 cases were reported from those who went for swab tests at health centres in Miri (11), Sibu (10), Bintulu (3), Kapit (1) and Kuching (1).

Today, nine symptomatic cases were found in Bintulu (3), Kanowit (2), Sibu (1), Miri (1), Sebauh (1) and Julau (1).

Meanwhile, there were three Sarawakians tested positive with Covid-19 where two of them returned from Kuala Lumpur and one from Negeri Sembilan.

Sri Aman also recorded one detainee who got the Coronavirus infection from Indonesia.

Moving on, there was a total of 44 new cases related to active clusters in the state today.

The Jalan Muhibbah Cluster recorded the highest number of new cases today, with all 15 of them found in Betong.

Coming next in line, the Pasai Cluster reported 12 Covid-19 cases in Kapit alone, and the Emperoh Jambu Cluster with five cases in Kuching (2), Serian (2) and Asajaya (1).

While four cases in Kapit were traced back to the Jan Yong Cluster, one case in Bintulu was found related to the Rakut Cluster and another two in Beluru to the Seruas Cluster.

Gelong Cluster registered two cases in Kapit and one in Bukit Mabong while Jalan Green and Kejatau Clusters recorded one case each in Kuching and Sri Aman.

With 171 new Covid-19 cases today, the cumulative number of Covid-19 cases in Sarawak now stands at 9,545.

To make it worse, SDMC reported two Covid-19 fatality cases involving a 78-year-old female in Bintulu and an 80-year-old male in Sibu who passed away yesterday (Feb 27).

The patients had medical histories of high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney failure and prostate cancer.

With that, the cumulative number of Covid-19 deaths has increased to 83 or 0.87 per cent of total positive cases in Sarawak.

The committee also noted 203 recoveries across the state namely in Sibu Hospital (115), Sarawak General Hospital (37), Bintulu Hospital (20), Kapit Hospital (17), Miri Hospital (10) and Sarikei Hospital (4).

It also reported 2,364 patients who are still receiving treatment in the hospitals across the state. — DayakDaily
