KUCHING, Feb 3: Out of the 79 temporary evacuation centres (PPS) opened due to floods and landslides in the Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Betong, Sibu, Kapit, Mukah, Bintulu, and Miri divisions, 38 have been closed and 41 are still active, involving 2,799 heads of household (KIR) and 9,482 victims.

In a statement, Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the committee is in the process of assessing repair costs for infrastructure damaged by the disaster to ensure that recovery measures can be implemented promptly and effectively.

“As chairman of SDMC, I have also instructed all divisional disaster management committees to submit a list of KIR who have evacuated to any of the PPS by the end of the week,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said all agencies have been reminded to be prepared in terms of assets and logistics to face possible disasters, especially the second wave of floods.

Divisional Residents and District Officers, he said, are also instructed to ensure quick and effective responses in dealing with flood situations reported.

“I call on all citizens to always be vigilant and always take precautionary measures. The community is also advised to make early preparations should they be ordered to evacuate,” said Uggah, who is also the Deputy Premier.
