KUCHING, Oct 14: There is nothing wrong with having a Sarawakian politician appointed as deputy prime minister, says Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Abdul Karim, who is Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) vice president, opined although it is the prime minister’s prerogative, Sarawak and Sabah have never had any politician appointed as deputy prime minister.

“Instead of forming a cabinet consisting of 30 to 40 members, the prime minister can reduce the number and enlarge the deputy prime minister position to deputy prime minister 1, 2 and so on.

“If it helps to make everybody happy, why not? But we will look into this after the election,” he said during a press conference after officiating at the Engage and Taste (EAT): Taste of Borneo Conference 2022 held at Borneo Convention Center Kuching (BCCK) here today.

Abdul Karim said if Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) are able to deliver a sufficient number of seats to form and stabilise the new government after the 15th General Election (GE15), there are many ways of accommodating the demands of the region.

He pointed out that if Sarawak wants to be the king maker, what is important now is for for GPS to win as many seats as it can.

“Sarawak has 31 parliamentary seats, and (if Sarawakians are united and) if we can win 31 seats, please go for it

“Because with a larger number of seats, our bargaining power will be more. That is how I look at it,” he said. — DayakDaily
