Sarawak to discuss direct Pontianak-Kuching flight with Indonesia

TEBEDU, Sept 1: A discussion will be held with the Indonesian government over a Pontianak-Kuching direct flight, says Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.

He said the aim was to improve air connectivity between Sarawak and Pontianak in Indonesia.


Without disclosing the date for the discussion, Lee said AirAsia has applied for the route and the ball on now in Indonesia’s court.

“For a direct flight between the two regions, a discussion will be held with Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching (Raden Sigit Witjaksono).

“On our part, AirAsia has applied and we will leave it to Indonesian government on the flight they want to use,” Lee told reporters today at Tebedu Immigration and Customs Quarantine Station (ICQS), here.

Earlier, Lee launched the reopening of the express bus service between Pontianak and Kuching and vice versa.

Meanwhile, Raden said the Indonesian government welcomed both the reopening of the express bus services and improved air connectivity.

“It is good for transportation between the two regions be improved and in a win-win situation without compromising on safety and security,” he pointed out.
