SINGAPORE, Sept 9: Sarawak is planning to accelerate its shift to greener, smarter port operations across Asia-Pacific, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said the State is now at the forefront, developing green ports, producing green fuel, creating a green fuel bunkering hub, and implementing a common utilities corridor for advanced port facilities.

“To support our clean energy efforts, we are building gas terminal facilities and planning a new Kuching International Airport to meet modern transportation and sustainability needs, prioritising resilient, sustainable infrastructure,” he said when delivering his keynote speech on “Advancing Climate Change Solutions in A Divergent World” at Asia Pacific Petroleum Conference (APPEC) 2024 held at Raffles City Convention Centre in Singapore today. A copy of his speech text was made available to the media.

Abang Johari who is also Sarawak’s Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability (MEESty) further said the State is investing in advanced sectors like avionics and aircraft components and cutting-edge aerospace courses.

This initiative, he said, aligns with Sarawak’s broader goal of creating a sustainable, innovation-driven economy, equipping the youth with the skills to thrive in high-tech value chain industries and support the State’s economic transformation.

“Building roads on Sarawak’s challenging peat soils—similar to Singapore’s marine clay but more complex—poses settlement issues and greenhouse gas risks.

“To counter this, we are constructing elevated roads on peatlands. This method preserves peatlands’ carbon sequestration, supports our carbon capture efforts, and improves transportation efficiency.

“These initiatives reflect our commitment to balancing development with environmental stewardship, ensuring Sarawak leads in sustainable growth,” he added. — DayakDaily
