MIRI, May 28: A total of 106 deaths due to fatal road accidents were recorded Statewide from January to April this year which is an increase from the 91 deaths recorded in the same period last year, said Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.

“Overall, the statistics are worrying,” he told a group of local media on Saturday at a State-level Road safety campaign held in conjunction with the Gawai Dayak celebration here.

A total of 260 goodies in the form of motorcycle helmets and reflective warning triangle outdoor kits were distributed to road users.

He added that Sarawak had witnessed an increase in traffic fatality cases from 78 to 100.

For severe injuries, the number has increased from 60 to 72 people.

Because of this, the government, Lee added, would continue to conduct Ops Selamat for every festive season as part of their approach to instilling road safety awareness amongst road users.

On another note, Lee disclosed that the Sarawak Road Safety Council would reactivate the Traffic Game in stages in the State to teach lessons and promote awareness among children on road safety. ā€” DayakDaily
