Sarawak keen to host WDSF World Ranking Dancesport Championship next year

KUCHING, June 5: Sarawak is keen to host World Ranking Championship under World Dancesport Federation (WDSF) next year.

Minister of Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah noted that the chief adjudicator for the Borneo Open International Dancesport Championship and Convention (BOIDC) 2023 has acknowledged that Sarawak has the facilities and capability to host the WDSF World Ranking.

Following this, Fatimah informed the dancers and guests that next year would be an important year for Sarawak as it would play host for the Para Sukma Games.

“So why not (we do) another big event such as the World Ranking under WDSF since we have the facilities, ability and capability to be the host.

“Thus, on my part, I will inform my colleague, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak (Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah) as well the Premier of Sarawak (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg) and the Sarawak cabinet of the possibility of hosting the esteemed World Ranking (tournaments) under WDSF.

“Just send us a letter and we will do the rest for you,” she said when officiating the BOIDC 2023 event held at Raia Hotel and Convention Centre here last night.

The BOIDC 2023 is the first ever international dancesport event held in Sarawak.

Apart from contingents of Sarawak and other Malaysian states, the participating countries  included United Kingdom, the Philippines, Australia, China, Hong Kong (China), Italy, France, Slovenia, Indonesia, Chinese Taipei and Singapore.

The event saw Fatimah presented prizes to Kuala Lumpur’s pair Ooi Ken Vin and Zoe Tan Zi Wei who emerged champion for Youth A Open Latin category, beating Hong Kong’s Lam Tsz Kwan Arie and Kwok On Yu who settled as runner-up.

The third and fourth places were both won by Kuala Lumpur teams namely Vincent Lee Chen Sheng and Chong Le Xuan as well as Jason Lee Chong Sheng and Trixie Poon Yue Qing, respectively.

Amongst those present were Sarawak Federation of Chinese Associations (SFCA) president Dato Richard Wee, DanceSport Asia (DSA) secretary general John Fam, BOIDC 2023 organising chairperson Chan Tyng Tyng, Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak) chief executive officer (CEO) Amelia Roziman, Malaysia Dancesport Federation (MYDF) chairman Chua Zjen Fong and Sarawak Mirage Club founder Datin Amar Catherine Wee.
