KUCHING, Feb 17: The RM190 million Sarawak Infectious Disease Centre will focus on producing medicine and new treatment methods which can be used to control the spread of infectious diseases, especially related to Covid-19.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas thus emphasised that the collaboration between government agencies as well as Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) is important to combat the Covid-19 pandemic and all other pandemics in the future.

The Sarawak government through the Sarawak Research and Development Council (SRDC) and Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) has established the Sarawak Infectious Disease Centre last year.

“Appreciation and thanks to the Unimas researchers for their sweats, energy and time in helping the country fight Covid-19.

“Their contributions in the scientific field, namely the study on new Covid-19 variants and also scholarly writings from Unimas lecturers are a source of pride and are greatly appreciated,” he acknowledged.

Uggah, who is also the Unimas Pro Chancellor, highlighted this at the fourth session of the 25th Unimas Convocation held at the university today.

He also reminded the public to not be complacent even though Sarawak is in Phase 4 of the National Recovery Plan (NRP).

“Now, the Omicron variant is spreading in the community. I sincerely hope that we all continue to adhere to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) that have been set to break the chain of Covid-19 pandemic infections,” he said.— DayakDaily
