KUCHING, May 10: Stakan assemblyman Datuk Hamzah Brahim has drawn parallels between the traffic congestion in Stakan and that of Peninsular Malaysia, attributing the issue to a surge in individually-owned vehicles and population growth in the area.

“The traffic congestion in Stakan is so bad it’s as if it’s like in Malaya,” Hamzah said during his debate on the fifth day of Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.

According to him, the roads in Stakan are often used by people from all parts of Sarawak, especially those who are travelling between Asajaya and Kuching by taking the Samarahan route.

“I would expect Saturdays and Sundays to have less congestion, but it still happens, especially when the police or the Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ) are conducting roadblocks along the Stakan road.

“My phone would ring non-stop, having received calls from people complaining about the traffic congestion,” he said.

In order to tackle this problem, Hamzah suggested that the Sarawak Ministry of Transport explore more focused and effective methods such as road widening, construction of flyovers and overpass in Stakan area. — DayakDaily
