KUCHING, June 19: The Sarawak government plans to bid to host the prestigious World Robotics Olympiad (WRO) as part of its broader vision to position the State as a regional centre for digital talent and innovation.
Sarawak Minister for Education, Innovation, and Talent Development (MEITD), Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, said the move is aimed at attracting the brightest young minds globally while strengthening Sarawak’s technological ecosystem, according to a news report by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).
“We want to bring the best young minds to Sarawak and show that the state is developing as a centre for digital talent and innovation,” he said when officiating the Robotics Kit Handover Ceremony in conjunction with the National Robotics Competition (NRC) at the Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) Tower here yesterday (June 18).
To support this agenda, MEITD has approved grants totalling RM666,000 to boost robotics initiatives, including competitions and the development of educational programmes in schools statewide.
The handover ceremony is part of the ministry’s annual STEM Trailblazers Sarawak programme, which is being implemented across the northern, central, and southern zones to enhance student interest in science and technology.
Sagah also revealed that starting in 2026, Sarawak will offer STEM-based pre-degree and degree programmes at state-owned universities under its digital human capital development strategy.
“We want our youth to be prepared for the digital world. All courses will focus on STEM,” he said.
He further emphasised that a technology-based education is essential not just to produce engineers and scientists, but to develop a globally competitive, highly skilled, and tech-savvy workforce.
“Countries like Germany, Australia and South Korea are successful because they emphasise technical education. We also want to see the same thing happen in Sarawak,” he added. — DayakDaily
