KUCHING, April 22: Global energy major TotalEnergies is looking to expand investments in Sarawak’s renewable energy and gas sectors, signalling growing international confidence in the State’s energy transition strategy and resource potential.
The interest was conveyed during a meeting with Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan on the sidelines of Food and Hospitality Asia 2026 Expo in Singapore, both sides explored avenues to leverage Sarawak’s natural resources and TotalEnergies’ global expertise to drive new investments and long-term collaboration.
According to a media release today, a key focus was renewable energy, with TotalEnergies expressing interest in supporting Sarawak’s expansion of green capacity, particularly in ground-mounted and floating solar projects, complementing its strong hydropower base.
At the same time, discussions reaffirmed the continued importance of the oil and gas sector, with emphasis on Sarawak’s substantial gas reserves and its strategic roadmap for domestic utilisation and export.
TotalEnergies reiterated its commitment to upstream activities and its role in developing the State’s hydrocarbon resources.
Both parties also explored emerging investment opportunities in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS), which are key to decarbonisation efforts and represent new growth areas for Sarawak.
Significantly, TotalEnergies highlighted its recently announced joint venture with Masdar to accelerate renewable energy development across the Asia-Pacific, with Malaysia identified as a priority market. This partnership is expected to boost investment inflows and technical expertise into Sarawak.
The meeting concluded with both sides expressing optimism about translating discussions into concrete projects, reinforcing a shared commitment to advancing Sarawak’s economic growth and sustainability agenda.
Awang Tengah, who is also the Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED), is in Singapore for Food and Hospitality Asia 2026, where 19 Sarawakian companies are showcasing local products at the Sarawak Pavilion.
