The designation places the Sarawak Delta Geopark among the world’s recognised geoparks, defined by UNESCO as unified geographical areas where sites of international geological significance are managed through integrated approaches focusing on conservation, education and sustainable development.

Covering 2,685 square kilometres of land and 427 square kilometres of marine areas, the geopark features intricate river systems, coastal landscapes and sedimentary formations that reflect millions of years of Earth’s history.

Beyond its geological value, the area supports diverse ecosystems such as mangrove forests, peat swamps and estuarine environments that sustain rich biodiversity, further strengthening its global significance.

Local communities living within the Sarawak Delta Geopark continue to play a vital role, with traditions, livelihoods and cultural practices closely tied to the land and waterways, contributing to its cultural heritage.

The recognition reflects years of collaboration among government agencies, scientists, conservation partners and local communities to protect and sustainably manage the area, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

With the UNESCO Global Geopark status, Sarawak is expected to gain enhanced international visibility, paving the way for responsible tourism growth, stronger community-based initiatives and expanded environmental education programmes.

The milestone reinforces Sarawak’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship, positioning the State as an emerging eco-tourism and green economy hub in Southeast Asia. — DayakDaily
