Sabah-Sarawak Gas Pipeline fire incident believed to be caused by third-party contractor’s unrelated operations

KUCHING, Nov 16: A third-party contractor performing work unrelated to the Sabah-Sarawak Gas Pipeline (SSGP) operations is believed to have caused the fire incident near the pipeline’s Right-of-Way (ROW) area in Lawas earlier this afternoon.

Petronas Group Strategic Communications Media Communications Department confirmed the fire incident near KP132 in a statement today.

With regard to this incident, Petronas has lodged a police report.


“To this end, an investigation will commence in earnest. Petronas’ Emergency Response Team has been mobilised to the area.

“The company will work closely with all the relevant authorities to take the necessary action and preventive measures to contain the situation and safeguard the safety of the surrounding community and environment,” said Petronas.

Reports from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the fire involved one casualty and another wounded victim.

Meanwhile, the fire and explosion radius was estimated to have reached a radius of 400 metres, involving a half-burnt motor, a fully-burnt excavator, a 30-per-cent-burnt bulldozer and lorry. — DayakDaily
