TINJAR, Sept 10: PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd (PCSB) is strengthening safety awareness among local communities through engagement with community leaders, government agencies and contractors to ensure the safe and responsible implementation of Phase 1 of the Sabah-Sarawak Gas Pipeline (SSGP) Decommissioning Project.
PETRONAS Carigali (Sarawak Asset) SSGP general manager’s representative Hazli Kipli said collaboration among PETRONAS, government agencies, community leaders, contractors and local residents was crucial to ensuring that safety, health and environmental protection remained key priorities throughout the project.
“In every project implementation, including the SSGP Decommissioning Project, PETRONAS always values the role of community leaders, community heads, government agencies and local residents,” he said as reported by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).
Hazli said this in his welcoming remarks at the Programme to Strengthen Safety Culture with the Community, PETRONAS SSGP and Contractors at the Tinjar Sub-District Office here on Wednesday (Sept 9).
He said PETRONAS’ relationship with local communities extended beyond the development of the oil and gas industry, and was strengthened through cooperation, mutual trust and a shared commitment to benefiting local communities.
“PETRONAS’ approach is always based on respect, openness and a willingness to listen to community views in the implementation of our projects,” he said.
The programme also provided the community with information on potential hazards and risks associated with decommissioning activities, safety measures and the appropriate actions to be taken in the event of an emergency.
Phase 1 of the SSGP Decommissioning Project involves the demolition of Block Valve Stations and Data Logger Stations, removal of pipeline signage, site restoration, revegetation and environmental monitoring.
A total of 40 participants comprising representatives from government agencies, community leaders, local residents, PETRONAS and contractors took part in the programme.
The contractors involved included Samling Timber Sdn Bhd and Persafe Engineering Sdn Bhd.
Also present were Tinjar Sub-District Office administrative officer Deo Kenneth, Long Bedian Sub-District Office assistant administrative officer Nikolas Bidin, Miri Division Kayan Community Temenggong Elizabeth Deng, and community leaders from the Beluru District. — DayakDaily
