Rural youth need capacity building to succeed instead of MRP grants, cash handouts

KUCHING, Jan 1: The government must provide all the support required by the rural community to empower themselves, especially in economy, trade, business, and commerce.

According to Dayak National Congress (DNC) president Paul Raja in a statement today, the youth in rural areas need capacity building to succeed instead of Minor Rural Project (MRP) grants and cash handouts.

“What they need are infrastructure, credit facilities, security of title for their Native Customary Right (NCR) lands, marketing of agricultural products, road and transport, and internet. All of these are required if the rural areas are to be economically productive.

“Both the public and the private sectors must work together to ensure that success,” he added.

Meanwhile, Paul congratulated the newly installed State Government of Sarawak, which the voters have entrusted to rule the State for the next five years.

He also said that the public is disappointed with the new State Cabinet line-up because it looks like powers are concentrated in the hands of just a few people.

“We would have expected that there would be more hands to bring in fresh air to the challenges at hand.

“The Government must not be supercilious from its landslide victory but instead work to deliver what is expected of a good government,” he said. ― DayakDaily
