Robbery suspect jumps into Rajang River during raid, fails to escape police

The police apprehended the suspect who tried to flee the raid.

KAPIT, Aug 15: A 20-year old man who is suspected of robbing a retail shop on Aug 8 was finally apprehended last night.

Kapit district police chief, DSP Freddy Bian said at about 10pm, a police team conducted a raid at a longhouse at Jalan Nanga Sebatu to look for the suspect.

“The suspect, on seeing the police, ran to the upper floor of the longhouse and jumped into the Rajang River to escape,” he said.

However the police managed to arrest him.

In the robbery which happened at about 9pm on Aug 8, a 35-year-old female shop attendant and a male staff were about to close shop when the suspect is believed to have suddenly showed up.

According to Freddy, the suspect told them that he wanted to reload RM5.50 credit into his phone and handed over RM6 to the male staff.

When the staff opened the cash register machine to give back the change of 50 sen, the suspect took out a 7-inch knife and jumped up on the counter.

The staff tried to stop the suspect from getting the money in the machine but were attacked.

The suspect then fled with RM600. — DayakDaily
