KUCHING, June 19: Renowned local artist Gerald Goh has captured the spirit and legacy of entrepreneurship in Sarawak through his two-piece mural installation titled “The Origins of SMEs in Sarawak” and “A Tribute to Entrepreneurship”.
The striking 3D interactive mural, which pays homage to the evolution of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Sarawak—from their early beginnings during the Brooke era to their pivotal role in today’s vibrant economy—was crowned the Gold Prize winner in the Tropics City Mural Pillars Competition.
Organised by Tropics City to revitalise urban spaces through creative expression, the competition drew submissions from a diverse group of local artists.
According to a media release today, Goh’s winning mural stood out for its creativity, historical richness, and cultural relevance. It not only celebrates Sarawak’s entrepreneurial journey but also reflects enduring values of peace, trade, and community-driven progress that have shaped the State’s economic identity.

The SME Association of Sarawak, under the leadership of president Jordan Ong, proudly took part in the event, viewing it as a meaningful platform for storytelling through art.
At the prize-giving ceremony, Ong presented the Gold Prize Award and a RM3,000 cash prize to Goh, commending the mural for bringing Sarawak’s business history to life.
“This is a meaningful platform that not only beautifies public spaces but also uplifts local talent and promotes creative entrepreneurship. We are proud to support efforts that bridge culture, art and economic development,” he said.
During the ceremony, Tropics City executive director Nicholas Wong led SME Sarawak council members on a guided tour of the mural installations, sharing the vision behind the project and the importance of public art in shaping inclusive and inspiring urban environments.
Wong emphasised that the event highlighted the synergy between private development initiatives and community-driven organisations in fostering cultural appreciation and economic growth.
The SME Association of Sarawak reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that foster local creativity, preserve cultural heritage, and strengthen the socio-economic fabric of the community through collaborative and artistic endeavours. — DayakDaily
