The residential quarters belonging to DID Sarawak in Limbang being consumed by the fire.

KUCHING, Aug 15: A 12-year-old boy who was initially thought to be inside a burning building managed to escaped a fiery death today.

The fire destroyed a Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sarawak residential quarters in Limbang.

The Limbang fire station received the emergency alert at 6.30pm and immediately despatched a team led by commanding officer PPgB Clarence D Primus Tiandun to the location at Jalan Kubong off Jalan Kubu 1, some 4km away.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the 40 ft x 35 ft non-permanent structure was already 80 per cent destroyed.

Although no casualties were reported, the firefighters were initially told that the boy was still inside the building.

However, he managed to escape from the burning house before the fire spread further and was found safe and unharmed.

The quarters’ other occupants were his parents and 16-year-old sister.

According to Clarence, firefighting operations were somewhat hampered because there were no fire hydrants nearby, prompting the firefighters to look for one further away. They also encountered weak water pressure, followed by heavy rain and strong wind. — DayakDaily
