BINTULU, July 7: Kemena assemblyman Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom has called for a reassessment and upgrading of Sebauh’s drainage system to address recurring flooding as development and residential areas continue to expand across the district.
He said this is because some areas in Sebauh still rely on earth drains which were built years ago, despite population growth and ongoing development requiring a more modern and effective drainage system.
“Recently, Bintulu was hit by flooding. Within just 24 hours, the area was inundated. We need to understand the cause—whether the drains were clogged, the drainage system was obstructed, or the drain capacity is no longer adequate.
“We must upgrade the drainage system. I want improvements to Sebauh’s drainage system to become one of our key performance indicators (KPIs) over the next two years.
“If Sebauh continues to experience flooding, all development efforts will be affected,” he said during the officiation of the Sebauh Festival 2026 at the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) parking lot in Sebauh on Monday (July 6), as reported by TVS.
At the same time, Dr Rundi, who is also the Minister for Food Industry, Commodity, and Regional Development Sarawak, urged the BDA to give serious attention to upgrading Sebauh’s drainage system so that the area will be better prepared to support future development. — DayakDaily
