KUCHING, July 17: The Sarawak Gold One (SG1) variety was selected as the primary focus of the development of the pineapple industry in Northern Sarawak through a zone-based development approach that considers the suitability of the land and the potential of each area.
According to the Minister for Food Industry, Commodity, and Regional Development Sarawak, Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, this is part of the State government’s strategy to strengthen the pineapple industry in a more structured and sustainable manner.
He said pineapple industry development in the Central Zone, covering Sibu, Mukah, and Sarikei, will utilise a combination of suitable varieties. At the same time, the Southern Zone will focus on varieties such as MD2 and N36.
“Each zone has its own potential and suitable varieties. In the north, we are focusing on SG1,” he told a press conference after an official working visit to Ning Planters Farm in Tukau, Miri, on Wednesday (July 15), as reported by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).
He added that the development of the pineapple industry is no longer focused solely on cultivation but encompasses the entire value chain, including processing, research and development (R&D), training, marketing, and the adoption of modern technology to ensure consistent, high-quality production.
Dr Rundi highlighted that this approach could enhance the competitiveness of Sarawak’s pineapple industry while creating more economic opportunities for farmers and local entrepreneurs. — DayakDaily
