KUCHING, Apr 27: The Sibu International Powerboat Race (SIPR) 2026 has been recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) for assembling 251 participating boats, a milestone that underscores its strong potential to be developed into an international-level water sports event.

According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof said the record turnout highlights SIPR’s growing appeal, positioning Sibu as a rising marine sports hub in Sarawak and described the MBOR recognition as a challenge to further raise standards of event organisation.

“The recognition reflects the event’s capability and momentum to grow into a world-class water sports attraction.

“The government will continue supporting the event’s long-term development, including strengthening administrative coordination and upgrading facilities at the venue to ensure SIPR remains a sustainable annual programme,” he said when speaking at the closing ceremony held at Pulau Li Hua Waterfront on Sunday (Apr 26).

On infrastructure, he stressed that any proposed development at Pulau Li Hua Waterfront must be comprehensively assessed with the involvement of landowners, as the site is under private ownership.

“I am confident the State and federal governments can work together to revitalise this waterfront, including obtaining approvals from relevant agencies such as the Sarawak Rivers Board for facilities like pontoons and a covered stage,” he said, adding that he would bring the proposal to the attention of the State government through appropriate channels.

Earlier, he announced an allocation of RM300,000 to support the organisation of SIPR 2026 and expressed appreciation to all parties involved for ensuring smooth operations and safety throughout the programme.

In the race results, Team Catamaran from Brunei emerged champion in the Formula 3 (SST60) category followed by Meligai Warrior from Kapit in second place, Machan from Kanowit in third and Eighty Ninety from Brunei in fourth. — DayakDaily
