KUCHING, May 13: Semenggoh Wildlife Centre welcomed its latest resident on May 10 after orangutan Selina gave birth to a newborn baby, giving staff and visitors of the centre a rare glimpse of the first moments between mother and infant.

Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) has released photos of the loving moments between the mom and baby, whose name has not been revealed, as they appeared at Feeding Platform 2 at 4pm on Tuesday.

Photos showed the beautiful deep orange reddish-brown infant clinging on to its mother as they relaxed and enjoyed the natural surroundings while soaking up the sunshine in its habitat.

In a social media post, SFC said that the infant orangutan is 18-year-old Selina’s second baby after Rem, its first-born six years ago.

“It was believed that Selina conceived in August 2021. Selina was last spotted at Semenggoh Wildlife Centre on May 2 before today’s (May 10) appearance.”

SFC pointed out that the birth of this infant orangutan, who appeared to be strong and healthy, was a testament of the success of the conservation efforts by SFC and the Sarawak government.

Sharing another exciting news, SFC said they are currently waiting for another bundle of joy from a 20-year-old orangutan, Saddamiah.

“Head down to Semenggoh Wildlife Centre and you might be able to catch a glimpse of the adorable baby.”

SFC and Semenggoh Wildlife Centre also encouraged the public to adopt an orangutan through its Orangutan Adoption Programme.
