MPP chairman: RM7.46 million to address flood issue at Stakan river

KUCHING, May 13: The RM7.46 million Stakan river flood mitigation project will help to address the flood issue in 7th Mile.

According to Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang, the project’s objective is not just to solve the flooding problem but also to protect properties on both sides of the river.

“Through this project, we will have a big waterway that acts as a huge reservoir to contain water during heavy rain.

“I hope we can minimise the flooding issues in the 7th Mile old bazaar,” he told reporters after meeting with the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) personnel at the project site in Stakan Lorong 3 today.

Lo said the project involves widening the existing drainage along the river from three metres to 12 metres.

He added that a concrete wall would be constructed for both sides of the river.

Meanwhile, Lo, who is also Batu Kitang assemblyman, said the repair works for the damaged road in Taman Matang Jaya 3 will commence as soon as possible.

He said the Public Works Department (JKR) is aware of the issue, and an appointed contractor will carry out repair works.

He pointed out that the previous contractor involved in the road project had been terminated.

“This is because while constructing the road, the contractor has realigned all the drainages and moved the ditch in the wrong place, which caused the landslides, thus damaging the road,” he explained. — DayakDaily
