KUCHING, Feb 14: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has expressed the Sarawak government’s interest in supplying liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the European Union (EU) should the latter be interested.

Abang Johari said he had a conversation with Ambassador of the EU to Malaysia, His Excellency Michalis Rokas which touched on Sarawak’s LNG supply.

“When I met His Excellency, there was a war in Europe and he was talking about gas, the distribution of gas and disruption of gas. And the Ambassador was talking to me about our LNG.

“There could be a possibility for us (Sarawak) to send LNG to the EU. Welcome, if you want to have LNG from Sarawak,” he said during the EU-Malaysia Business Day 2024 Networking Dinner held at a local hotel here tonight.

Other than LNG, Abang Johari also elaborated on the generation of renewable energy from various resources that Sarawak is actively exploring, such as hydrogen, hydropower, wind, and solar.

Boasting of Sarawak’s strength in having abundant resources, he invited EU partners to look into increasing investments in Sarawak.

“What I’m saying here is, these are the strengths of Sarawak. We combine (our resources) and help the world mitigate carbon emissions and greenhouse effects.

“The Sarawak government is doing that, and of course, we cannot do it alone. You (the EU) have the experiences, you have the technology. You just explore which area you can assist us and subsequently, you assist the world.

“It’s not for Sarawak, not for the EU, but for humanity. That is the objective of the Sarawak government,” said Abang Johari.
