TATAU, Aug 24: About 500km of logging roads in the Kakus interior have been identified for phased upgrading to improve road access for communities in the area.
Minister in the Premier’s Department and Kakus assemblyman Dato Sri John Sikie Tayai said the figure was part of some 5,700km of logging roads across Sarawak identified for upgrading.
According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), he said the works would be carried out in stages due to the high costs involved and the challenging terrain in the interior.
“Several roads in the Kakus interior were identified during the JKR Sarawak XPDC 2.0 expedition in August 2025, which was also joined by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
“Among the roads identified were Jalan Penyarai, Jalan Sungai Muput, the road to Ulu Kakus, Jalan Sangan-Nanga Merit and Jalan Nanga Takan,” he said at the launch of the Rural Transformation Project (MRP) and Sarawak Poor Housing Improvement Project (PPRMS) at Rumah Ngalai Nanang, Nanga Temajai, Anap, here on Sunday (Aug 23).
He said improving road access remained important for communities in Kakus, where some areas still lacked proper connectivity.
In the meantime, Rural Transformation Project (RTP) allocations for the constituency were being used to repair damaged roads, while larger-scale upgrading works would be carried out over the longer term.
Meanwhile, Selangau MP Edwin Banta expressed support for development efforts in Kakus, including cooperation between elected representatives to ensure planned projects could be carried out effectively.
He also pledged continued support for the local community, including assistance for Selangau students pursuing higher education.
At the event, RM95,000 in MRP funding from the Selangau MP’s allocation was handed over to 45 Women’s Bureaus.
The PPRMS project launched during the ceremony involved replacing the roof and ceiling of all 16 doors at Rumah Ngalai Nanang, funded through an allocation from the Kakus assemblyman. — DayakDaily
