KUCHING, April 19: Gedong is set to emerge as a new biotech development hub through a strategic collaborative project with a Japanese company involving the cultivation of algae, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced.
This project, a collaboration with Japanese company Chitose, will involve the cultivation of algae to produce biofuel and pharmaceutical products. This is expected to create thousands of jobs for locals, Abang Johari said according to a news report by TVS.
“This means Gedong will produce biofuel, oil that can be used as fuel, as well as byproducts that can be used to develop pharmaceutical medicines.
“Experts from Japan have already started coming to Gedong, and they will also train the local youth to become specialists. That’s why, once this initiative is underway, it will mark the beginning of a new, environmentally driven and sustainable industry,” he said in his address at the Gedong Hari Raya Aidilfitri Gathering 2025 event last night.
He therefore called on the younger generation to be prepared to play a key role in leading the State towards this major transformation which will harness the vast potential in renewable energy sources.
Meanwhile, according to Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), Abang Johari highlighted that Sarawak’s renewable energy policies have recently earned recognition from the World Economic Forum (WEF), positioning the State as an emerging economic power with great potential in Asia Pacific.
“WEF itself told me that they can see an area with great potential for economic growth in the Asia Pacific is Malaysia.
“In Malaysia, Sarawak is mentioned as a potential region with the policies practiced here, based on the study conducted by them (WEF),” he said.
He further noted that this recognition includes Bintulu which is now on the world’s radar as one of the four low-carbon industrial clusters globally, making the district the only one in Malaysia to receive such recognition from the WEF. – DayakDaily
