MANILA, Sept 8: A common legal framework is needed to facilitate cross-border energy sharing under the ASEAN power grid, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
According to TVS, he said the ASEAN power grid would be important in strengthening energy links and integrating the economies of ASEAN member states.
“This effort requires a common framework including legal aspects, to enable cross-border energy sharing more effectively.
“We have a long-term development vision up to 2030 and 2035, with the energy sector being one of the important foundations for achieving these targets,” he said.
He said this during a fireside chat session at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) headquarters in Manila today.
On governance, the Premier underscored Sarawak’s commitment to maintaining close collaboration with the federal government on matters requiring joint coordination, while fully exercising the State’s constitutional rights and jurisdiction under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
He also highlighted Bintulu’s emerging position as a low-carbon industrial cluster, a development paving the way for Sarawak to attract high-value investments, particularly from industry players prioritising clean energy and low-carbon production processes.
“Sarawak’s development agenda is increasingly shifting towards an approach that harmonises economic growth with environmental stewardship,” he noted.
He further explained that offering a reliable, sustainable energy supply is essential to keeping industry players competitive, enabling them to meet the stringent sustainability standards now required in global markets.
Ultimately, regional economic integration within ASEAN and the strengthening of the energy sector will prove vital in establishing Sarawak as a resilient and competitive economy within the region. — DayakDaily
