KUCHING, July 2: Politeknik Kuching Sarawak (PKS) has apologised and pledged to improve the condition of its student hostels following complaints raised on social media during the recent intake of new students.

In a statement shared on its social media yesterday (July 1), PKS acknowledged the concerns regarding less-than-satisfactory hostel conditions and expressed regret over the inconvenience experienced by students during the registration period for the Academic Session I 2026/2027.

The polytechnic said it had successfully provided hostel accommodation to 1,600 students, representing 96.2 per cent of the total 1,663 new students enrolled for the session, reflecting its commitment to prioritising student welfare and accommodation needs, particularly among first-year students.

To address the issues raised, PKS said it had implemented several immediate measures, including optimising the use of existing hostel spaces and facilities, providing additional hostel equipment in stages, carrying out maintenance and repair works, and replacing furniture where necessary.

The institution also said it was undertaking asset procurement initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of facilities available to students, with a focus on ensuring their welfare, safety and well-being.

According to PKS, its current hostel capacity can accommodate only about 50 per cent of its overall student population, highlighting the challenges faced in meeting growing accommodation demands.

As such, the polytechnic said efforts to expand hostel capacity would continue in line with the Ministry of Higher Education’s aspiration of providing hostel accommodation for at least 70 per cent of full-time undergraduate students enrolled physically by 2035.

PKS further assured that it would strengthen its hostel monitoring and management mechanisms to ensure facilities remain in good condition and are able to meet students’ needs.

The institution also welcomed feedback from students, parents and stakeholders, describing such input as important in helping improve service delivery and support the continued advancement of the country’s higher education sector. — DayakDaily
