KUCHING, March 10: Despite having three hydro dams built in the Belaga district, the area under the parliamentary of Ulu Rejang is still underdeveloped compared to the rest of the country.
Sarawak Parti Keadilan Rakyat (Keadilan) deputy chairman Abun Sui Anyit said as a resident who hailed from rural Belaga, which is far more backward than the rest of the country, it is only right that the area should be now developed drastically and with haste.
“This is to to appreciate the sacrifice of the people of Belaga who had given the Federal government the right to build the Bakun hydro dam before it was sold back to the Sarawak government,” he said in a statement today.
Likewise, two more hydro dams – Murum and Baleh – are also in the parliamentary constituency of Ulu Rejang.
Abun urged the Sarawak government to give full cooperation and support to the unity government if the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim wanted to develop Belaga District.
“We now have a prime minister who is committed and fully understands our need to develop the rural areas of Sarawak.
Abun also pointed out that this was proven, in Anwar’s winding speech as Minister of Finance in the parliament yesterday (March 9).
“The prime minister agreed that Sarawak need a big budget to be developed. He cited an example that if Peninsular Malaysia needed RM10 million, then Sarawak will need ten times more of RM100 million as we are still backward and need to be further developed,” he shared.
“We must support his statement and the people of Sabah and Sarawak must give undivided support to the prime minister,“ he said. — DayakDaily
