KUCHING, June 6: Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) could lead efforts to explore potential oil reserves in western Sarawak, with Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg citing geological trends that suggest hydrocarbon deposits may extend into areas such as Lundu.
According to him, the pattern of oil production stretching from Kimanis in Sabah through Brunei Darussalam and Sarawak’s existing producing areas, including Baram, Mukah and Balingian, indicates the possibility of similar reserves being present further west.
“While no discoveries have been made in the area to date, this was largely due to the absence of exploration activities rather than a lack of geological potential.
“PETROS could take the lead in assessing and exploring the region should no other industry players undertake the effort,” he said at the launch of the Sarawak Career and Training (SCaT) Fair 2026 here today.
Pointing to exploration technologies being used in Bintulu, he said such advancements have made it easier to identify and evaluate potential oil and gas deposits despite the high costs involved.
Abang Johari added that he has encouraged PETROS to play a more proactive role in studying Sarawak’s untapped hydrocarbon potential, particularly in areas that have yet to undergo extensive exploration. — DayakDaily
