KUCHING, Aug 13: The Sarawak Regional Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is committed to strengthening the Sarawak government’s relations with foreign countries, including exploring cooperation opportunities that could support the State’s development.
Sarawak Regional Office director Hendy Assan said the office’s role had expanded beyond consular matters to include serving as a liaison between the Sarawak government and foreign embassies and countries.
He said the office was particularly focused on strengthening ties with ASEAN countries, China and the European Union, while identifying areas of mutual interest that could contribute to Sarawak’s development.
“The regional office initially focused on consular services for the people of Sarawak, but our role has now expanded.
“It includes serving as a liaison between the Sarawak government and foreign embassies and countries, particularly the European Union and China,” he said as reported by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).
Hendy said this when met by reporters after paying a courtesy call on Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Satria Pertiwi Complex here today.
Elaborating, he said relations with ASEAN countries were equally important, particularly given Sarawak’s shared borders with several ASEAN member states.
He added that ASEAN countries also viewed Sarawak as a model for development that could offer opportunities for collaboration, particularly in green and renewable energy.
Hendy said the courtesy call also covered Sarawak’s development achievements and the role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Regional Office in helping strengthen the State’s international relations in support of its development agenda.
“We discussed the development that has been carried out in Sarawak, how we are rapidly developing the state through the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, and how the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Regional Office can help establish relations with these foreign countries,” he said.
He added that the regional office was ready to support the Sarawak government in strengthening international relations and exploring cooperation opportunities in sectors of mutual interest. — DayakDaily
