MIRI, Aug 26: Expertise in the pipeline industry must continue to be strengthened as the sector remains a key component in supporting Sarawak’s transition from a traditional oil and gas-based economy towards a low-carbon future.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the evolving energy landscape was creating new opportunities, particularly for young engineers to leverage their existing knowledge and expertise to address emerging technological and energy challenges.
“The energy transition underway presents an opportunity for young engineers to build on the foundations and expertise they have developed to tackle new challenges.
“Discussions on pipeline design and integrity, subsea engineering, asset decommissioning and energy transition are not merely academic exercises, but form the practical foundation of the energy future we are building,” he said as reported by TVS.
He said this in his speech, which was delivered by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian at the opening of the Borneo Pipeline Conference 2026 (BPC 2026) here today.
Abang Johari said pipeline professionals would continue to play a crucial role in translating Sarawak’s energy resources into economic growth, particularly as the state strengthens its position across the energy value chain.
He said Sarawak was also expanding its presence in emerging energy sectors, including liquefied natural gas (LNG), hydropower and green hydrogen, in line with the state’s development aspirations under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030).
“Human capital development remains at the heart of Sarawak’s long-term aspirations. We greatly value the role of young pipeline professionals in nurturing local talent and strengthening our pool of knowledge and expertise.
“I encourage them to seize this opportunity to ask new questions, challenge existing ideas and build professional relationships that will benefit them throughout their careers,” he said.
The three-day BPC 2026 brings together industry players, engineers and professionals from Malaysia and abroad to exchange views on technological advancements, infrastructure integrity and the future of the pipeline industry amid the global energy transition.
The conference also provides a platform to strengthen knowledge-sharing and explore innovative solutions to support the continued development of Sarawak’s energy sector towards a low-carbon future. — DayakDaily
