KUCHING, June 10: Employees affected by Petroliam Nasional Berhad’s (PETRONAS) ongoing workforce rationalisation exercise will receive a market-competitive separation package that exceeds statutory requirements, along with comprehensive support including potential placements in government-linked companies (GLCs), upskilling and reskilling programmes, career coaching, and financial planning assistance.
This follows PETRONAS’ recent announcement of workforce adjustments expected to impact approximately 10 per cent of its total workforce as part of its strategic transformation.
In a media release today, PETRONAS said it has established a Transition Council and People Development Committees to oversee talent mapping and placement decisions, which are made collectively through structured governance platforms in full compliance with legal and industrial relations frameworks.
“PETRONAS is committed to managing this process fairly, objectively, and systematically.
“Engagements have been conducted with respective Department of Labour and Department of Industrial Relations under Ministry of Human Resources to ensure the planned implementation meets the statutory requirements,” the statement read.
The national oil company affirmed its commitment to safeguarding employees’ welfare as it navigates a polycrisis driven by global pressures, coupled with heightened challenges to unlock the full potential of its oil and gas resources in Malaysia.
Acknowledging the difficulty of the decision, PETRONAS underscored that the move is necessary to ensure the company’s long-term resilience and continued ability to serve the nation. The transformation will also support its evolution from a traditional oil and gas company into an agile, integrated energy player offering lower-carbon energy solutions.
“Impacted employees will not only receive a separation package above statutory minimums but also access to career coaching, job search assistance, emotional support services, medical aid programmes, and financial planning guidance.
“The above packages and benefits are structured based on employees’ years of service and may vary depending on employee category and eligibility,” it said.
To further support affected employees, PETRONAS is working in collaboration with Perkeso through the MyFutureJobs platform to identify job placement opportunities in other sectors. The company is also actively engaging with GLCs to facilitate potential employment placements within their organisations.
Employees considering alternative career paths will also have access to the PETRONAS Innovation Garage Entrepreneurship Programme, which provides structured support for business ownership and startup ventures.
This transformation aims to strengthen PETRONAS’ resilience and relevance in the global energy transition, enabling continued growth through strategic investments and the development of a high-performing, value-driven workforce. — DayakDaily
