KUCHING, Feb 7: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas has clarified that the lack of approval from the Education Ministry is the reason for the delay in installing several air conditioners at a school in Bukit Saban.

Uggah, who is also Bukit Saban assemblyman, said he had just realised that he needed to get consent from the Education Ministry before providing any material aid to local schools.

“I realised that we, as the elected representatives, need to first get the Education Ministry’s consent now. We cannot just hand over to the school whatever aid we have promised based on their request,” he explained.

He said he had recently purchased a few air conditioners for a school’s hall, but they were never installed even after six months they were delivered to the school.

“When I asked why, I was told this is because the (Education) Ministry has yet to give its green light for them to be installed. I was also told to write to the Ministry to seek its approval.

“It’s not that we have reneged on our promises but our hands are tied,” said Uggah when officiating at the SK Nanga Gayau annual Students Appreciation Gathering held at the school here today.

He also gave his word that he would seek clarification from the Sarawak education office over the matter.

Meanwhile, Uggah announced a RM40,000 grant to SK Nanga Gayau’s parent-teacher association (PTA). — DayakDaily
