KUCHING, Nov 5: Five-term MP Dato Sri Tiong King Sing (GPS-PDP) will be up against only two contenders in P217 Bintulu after Parti Bumi Kenyalang’s (PBK) last-minute candidate pull out due to limited resources.

PBK president Voon Lee Shan had previously named Leighton Manjah as the party’s candidate for Bintulu, resulting in at least a four-cornered tussle for the seat.

Today’s nomination concluded Tiong’s challengers to be his old rival Tony Chiew Chan Yew (PH-DAP) and Duke Jateng (PN-Bersatu).

Returning officer Muhammad Dino Amid announcing the candidates for Bintulu; Duke, Tiong and Chiew (from third left to right) at Bintulu Civic Centre here today (Nov 5, 2022).

In the 2018 general election, Chiew pit himself against the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) president and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) heavyweight, who won gracefully with a majority of 7,022 votes.

This will be Chiew’s second time trying to topple the PDP giant who has since 1999 established a strong foundation in Bintulu. — DayakDaily
